Meet & Greet at Bay Preserve from 1:30-3:30 on Oct 1, 2018

Sponsored by the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast

PLAM participants who attended this field trip were able to:

  • socialize with fellow PLAM attendees
  • tour the beautiful Bay Preserve and historic homestead (guided tours offered at 2 & 3 pm)
  • learn about Conservation Foundation’s public/private partnerships and lands in the region 
  • enjoy light refreshments compliments of the Conservation Foundation

Where? Bay Preserve is approximately 30 minutes south of downtown Sarasota and located at 400 Palmetto Drive, Osprey, just west of US-41. From US-41, turn west on Webb St. or W. Oak St., then north on Palmetto Drive. Take Palmetto Drive to its terminus at the shelled parking lot of Bay Preserve. After parking, follow the driveway down to the main house on the water.

Triangle Ranch Hayride from 1:30-3:30 on Oct 1, 2018

Sponsored by Triangle Ranch & the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast

PLAM participants who attended this field trip were able to:

  • take a hayride tour of the Triangle Ranch along the Myakka River and through pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, cattle grazing pastures
  • learn about Triangle Ranch’s history, working Cattle Ranch and Conservation lands   
  • enjoy light refreshments compliments of the Conservation Foundation

Sarasota Bay Explorers – Sea Life Encounter Boat Tour from 2:00-4:00 on Oct 1, 2018

Sponsored by Conservation Florida

PLAM participants who attended this field trip were able to:

  • socialize with fellow PLAM attendees
  • cruise through Sarasota and Roberts Bay
  • learn about learn about the region’s history, birds, wildlife and barrier islands 
  • take a guided tour with Tina Matthews, Florida Master Naturalist.

Where? Pick up from the Hyatt Marina

Blackbeard's Ranch from 1:30-4:30 on October 3, 2018

  • enjoy a Bar-B-Que lunch showcasing Florida Cattle Ranchers Beef;
  • learn about regional conservation efforts;
  • learn about the importance of cattle ranching to conservation in Florida;
  • take a swamp buggy tour through existing and planned conservation easement and wetland restoration areas;

Myakka River State Park from 1:30-3:30 on Oct 3, 2018

PLAM participants who attended this field trip were able to:

  • hike along the Myakka River and travel through wetlands, prairies, pine flatwoods, oak hammocks
  • learn about Parks history, wildlife, and natural lands   

Where? Myakka River State Park is approximately 30 minutes from downtown Sarasota and located at 13208 State Road 72 , Sarasota FL 34241

Bring? Bug spray & camera; Lunch is not provided but there is a restuarant on site.

Selby Botanical Gardens – Sponsored by Audubon Florida

Originally the home of William and Marie Selby, the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens showcases a living collection of rare and beautiful tropical plants. The Gardens is also a respected world leader in the study and conservation of plants, particularly epiphytes including orchids, bromeliads, gesneriads and ferns. Ringling Museum – Sponsored by Pickett Surveying & Engineering

John Ringling was one of the five brothers who founded the Ringling Brothers Circus. John and his wife Mable settled in Sarasota in 1911 to build their extravagant winter home and a center for the arts. At the Ringling Museum you can take a tour of the Circus Museum, the Museum of Art, and Ca’d’Zan (John and Mable Ringling’s winter mansion).   • Hours:  Open daily 10:00am – 5:00pm. The grounds open daily 9:30am – 5:30pm, however the hours may vary due to special events.

Legacy Trail – Sponsored by The Trust for Public Land

  • Explore the Legacy Trail on your own or with a bike tour though Sarasota County’s 12.5-mile multi-use recreational trail. The trail includes rest stops, trailheads, and free parking. To learn more about the Legacy Trail visit this website. You can also book a bike tour of the Legacy Trail for $60 (includes bike rental, helmet, water, and snacks) with Sarasota Bike Tours. The bike ride is approximately 2 hours long and covers 20-24 miles round trip.
  • Cost:  Free if registered through Eventbrite
