ParisParis Santiago

Paris Santiago began her first semester in the MS Environmental Science program at FAU in the Fall 2022 semester. She holds a BA in Theatre Studies with a double minor in Dance and Environmental Studies (University of Central Florida, 2020) and a BS in Environmental Science with a focus in Biosecurity (Broward College, 2021). She began her work with FAU CES as a research assistant in April of 2022 and is now a graduate researcher for the center, as well as a teaching assistant. Paris enjoys the interdisciplinarity that Environmental Science requires, and her specific interests include outreach and education pertaining to Florida's ecology and natural systems. She has a biological science background and looks forward to expanding into the social science aspects of Environmental Science. Paris looks forward to completing her research at CES with her advisor, Dr. Colin Polsky.

Q & A with Paris

What brought you to FAU and to CES?

I was in the process of applying for graduate school, and for science students this typically entails connecting with faculty to advise your research and collaborate with throughout your degree program. As a South Floridian, FAU was one of my top choices. Knowing I wanted to focus on outreach and communication in the environmental science field, Dr. Colin Polsky was an excellent fit for my academic and professional goals. Once I began applying to FAU, I reached out to Dr. Polsky, who agreed to serve as my academic advisor for my M.S., and also offered me a position at CES the spring prior to my first semester as an FAU student.

What did degree(s) did you earn from FAU and why did you pick this academic focus?

I graduated in 2024 with a Master of Science in Environmental Science. I have a passion for biological, conservation, and social sciences, and the interdisciplinarity of environmental science allowed me to pursue all of these areas, combine them, and actively work in positions that fostered my growth during my time as a student.

What work did you do with CES, such as research or other projects?

As a graduate research assistant, I worked on the solar generator project, maintaining our sustainable jobs database, provided support on the NAS Gulf and FCRS projects, conducted interviews and wrote articles for the Invading Sea, and attended many outreach events across South Florida.

What was your thesis focus?

Flood Literacy in South Florida.

What is your favorite memory at CES?

Representing the lab at FAU ScienceFest (Fall 2022). I was operating our table alone and was able to speak in depth with many students, faculty, and staff about our research projects, facilities, and goals. I aim to utilize my science communication background to pursue science education and outreach professionally, and this day made me feel capable of that.

What are you doing with your work now?

I am hoping to continue working as a science educator, whether that be through returning to NGOs or in formal settings. I want to be a touchstone of information for anyone desiring to learn.

What advice do you have for students interested in your field of work?

Don’t be afraid to branch out. Environmental science is such a broad field with endless opportunities for growth and it is one of my favorite things about the field.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love spending time with animals (I live on a farm!), reading, exploring Florida, and going to concerts.
