Glen started his pursuit of the environmental with bachelors’ degree at Florida Atlantic Universities College of Arts and Letters, communication studies program. Before transitioning into from his bachelors into his masters’ degree, Glen took a year off to assist the Broward County Environmental Planning and Community Resilience Division as an intern in preparation for the transition in the field of geosciences. Developing off of the skills and knowledge he has decided to pursue a masters’ degree in Florida Atlantic Universities College of Science geosciences program. Glen is particularly interested in environmental sciences and social sciences together; how people interact, perceive, or otherwise think about the environment.
After studying at Broward college, Glen transferred into Florida Atlantic University in order to further his education at a local and well-established university.
Glen loved his work with the Center for Environmental Studies, where he worked on several research projects: the statewide resilience survey, the Estates of Fort Lauderdale neighborhood resilience survey, and the statewide watershed floodplains grant.
I found CES by a series of truly fortunate events. I was interning with the Broward County Environmental Planning and Community Resilience Division at the time when I met then head of CES Dr. Colin Polsky and learned about the work that he and CES did. I had already received a Bachelor’s degree from FAU at this point and it was largely CES and their work that prompted me to return there for my Master’s.
My degree is a Master’s of Geoscience with certificate in GIS.
I chose that program because I really enjoyed the flexibility that the Geoscience’s program offered in terms of coursework. I had a wide variety of courses where I learned skills I’m still returning to today.
While working with CES I was involved with multiple projects in addition to my thesis research, however the Florida Climate Resilience Survey will always hold a special place in my heart as my favorite research done for CES. This was where my introduction to survey work and data analysis kicked off.
My thesis was on how a person’s cultural identity impacts their risk perceptions. Specifically focusing in on risk of flooding given the Florida’s landscape when it comes to flooding whether storm surge, king tide, or some other flooding altogether.
My favorite memory of CES will always be the wonderful people I had the opportunity to work with. Being able to come together from a wide range of backgrounds and pull together some incredible research findings, it was an amazing experience.
I’m currently working with a market research and consulting firm here in Colorado. We specialize in parks and recreation work, and currently have ongoing projects with National Park Service which are always fun and challenging projects.
Whether it’s environmental science, geoscience, parks and recreation, or some other discipline loosely within this field of work, it’s always going to be work worth doing. The value that the natural world around us is always.
My partner and I have recently found / adopted a trio of kittens and the chaos that has ensued takes up most of our free time nowadays. When I’m not wrangling cats I’m been taking advantage of the four seasons that Colorado has to offer, going on hikes, backing trips, and just generally traveling around the area.
