About the Speaker: Dr. Austin Becker is a faculty member of the Department of Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island. He is an interdisciplinary social scientist working across the fields of planning, policy, engineering, design, and climate-change science. He uses seaports as a case study, focusing on creating and testing tools that help decision makers engage with complex problems involving uncertainty, consequences of large-scale shifts in climate over long time horizons, and the resulting challenges in policy and planning. Dr. Becker’s work is recognized globally and he is a regularly invited speaker at expert meetings of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), The Transportation Research Board and numerous other conferences. In 2017, Dr. Becker was awarded the Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship in Ocean Sciences. He earned a PhD in Environment and Resources at Stanford University, a Master of Marine Affairs and Master of Environmental Science and Management at URI, and a B.A. at Hampshire College. He maintains his 500-Ton U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license for ocean-going vessels. More info at web/uri.edu/abecker
