Water Professionals Program

AboutCES is proud to host the 13th annual IHE Delft Water Professionals Program (formerly UNESCO-IHE Water Professionals Program) from May 23 - June 7, 2018. Twenty graduate students from developing nations will visit South Florida for a highly specialized program in solving water challenges. CES is coordinating and will lead the two-week residency program that combines a mix of technical lectures and informative field trips throughout South Florida.

Based at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in Delft, The Netherlands, the students are a part of the Institute’s Hydroinformatics for Water & Environmental Management program. The Institute incorporates the South Florida component into the student’s overall program as they understand the significance of learning from local scientists utilizing real life case studies. Partners from the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), USGS and multiple other public agencies engage the students by using the Everglades and other significant restoration projects through a practical, hands-on approach. The students and their professors will:

  • Visit Florida’s Everglades to learn about wetlands restoration and challenges;
  • Attend sessions by SFWMD & USGS scientists on modeling, climate change and policies;
  • Visit Lake Okeechobee to learn about water quality issues and storage;
  • Investigate the SFWMD’s flood control, canal and drainage system;
  • Explore the Kissimmee River by boat to learn about the largest river restoration;
  • Present their research interests at a symposium poster session at the SFWMD.

While portions of the program expenses are generously sponsored by USGS, IHE Delft and CES (with extensive in-kind support from SFWMD), there are many components that are not covered. CES has kicked off our fundraising campaign for this important and exciting program and hope that you will join us. We will be holding a public poster session during the 2018 program and hope that you will be able to come by and meet the next cadre of exceptionally talented global water professionals!
