The Invading Sea

The Invading Sea is a non-partisan source for news, commentary and educational content about climate change and other environmental issues affecting Florida.

The website is managed by Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Environmental Studies in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. Dr. Colin Polsky , the center’s director and a professor of geosciences at FAU, oversees the site.

Nathan Crabbe serves as editor of The Invading Sea. He can be reached by email at ncrabbe@fau.edu and by phone at (352) 415-3085. Email him with opinion submissions or any questions about the site.

See our press release and welcome note for more information.

The Invading Sea was founded in 2018 as a collaboration among the editorial boards of the Miami Herald, Palm Beach Post and Sun Sentinel, with Miami-based public radio station WLRN serving as a news partner. The collaboration was unique at the time because news organizations that normally competed agreed to share opinion content and coordinate the publication of editorials.

Its media partners  later expanded to include more than 25 daily newspapers across Florida, while its focus expanded beyond climate change to other environmental issues affecting the state. The Invading Sea won the Burl Osborne Award for Editorial Leadership, a national honor awarded annually by the News Leaders Association, and other state and national awards.

The website now posts original content developed by CES staff and other contributors, along with opinion pieces originally published by its media partners. CES is developing additional partnerships to broaden the range of content on the site, including working with faculty and students at FAU and other universities.

The opinions expressed in the pieces published on The Invading Sea represent those of the individual authors and not necessarily those of the FAU or CES.
