Florida's Wildlife: On the Frontline of Climate Change

October 1-3, 2008   •  Rosen PLAZA, Orlando

Goal Statement

Florida's wildlife will face unprecedented consequences associated with climate change. With this forecast, presenters and workshop participants will identify key research needs, improve awareness of impacts on wildlife, and develop ideas to optimize species conservation for integration into Florida Fish and Wildlife's comprehensive climate change strategy.

Invitees:

  • Fish and wildlife leaders, managers, biologists, researchers, and academia, who have an interest in developing policy or are involved in planning for sustainable wildlife populations in Florida.
  • Non-governmental organizations, land managers, state, regional, county, and local governments.
  • Game and non-game wildlife organizations and enthusiasts
  • Federal (Fish and Wildlife Service, Forest Service, National Park Service, Department of Defense, National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration, Army Corp of Engineers) and tribal leaders in Florida
  • Media and educational personnel

Go Zero Program

Using The Conservation Fund's (TCF) Go Zero Program, the Center for Environmental Studies at Florida Atlantic University offset travel and energy use associated with the Summit by planting 14 trees at Red River National Wildlife Refuge. These trees will trap approximately 16.5 tons of CO2 over their lifetime. In addition to cleaning our air, the new forests at Red River will filter the water we drink, restore sensitive wildlife habitat and enhance public recreation areas for current and future generations.
