UNESCO-IHE Water Professionals Program

In the Spring of 2017, CES was proud to host the 12th annual UNESCO-IHE Water Professionals Program from May 24 - June 8. Twenty-two graduate students from developing nations came to South Florida for a highly specialized program in solving water challenges. CES coordinated and led the two-week residency program that combined a mix of technical lectures and informative field trips throughout South Florida.

Based at the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft, The Netherlands, the students are a part of the Institute’s Hydroinformatics for Water & Environmental Management program. The Institute incorporates the South Florida component into the student’s overall program as they understand the significance of learning from local scientists utilizing real life case studies. Partners from the S. FL Water Management District (SFWMD), USGS and multiple other public agencies engaged the students by using the Everglades and other significant restoration projects through a practical, hands-on approach. The students and their professors were able to:

  • Visit a variety of components of the Greater Everglades restoration project and interact and learn from the agencies who are implementing it;
  • Attended highly specialized lectures with SFWMD & USGS leading scientists on modeling, policy and implementation; and,
  • Participate in a variety of field trips, learning from top public and private agency experts.

While portions of the program expenses are generously sponsored by USGS, UNESCO-IHE and CES (with extensive in-kind support from SFWMD), there are many components that are not covered. CES will be kicking off our fund raising campaign soon for this important and exciting program and hope that you will join us. We will be holding a public poster session during the 2018 program and hope that you will be able to come by and meet the next cadre of exceptionally talented global water professionals!
