The
sawgrass-swept Everglades ... the zigzagging Kissimmee and Loxahatchee rivers
... cypress swamp and bone-dry scrub ... sugar sand beaches visited by sea
turtles ... tangles of mangroves ... slender barrier islands ... dolphins
and endangered manatees.
Southeast Florida is the 2008 setting for the Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment, an intensive week-long program of continuing education for working reporters who cover the environment. Florida Atlantic University is inviting applications for year three of this subtropical training institute, conducted as a combination of field trips, visits to important natural areas and classroom instruction. The program, sponsored by the Scripps Howard Foundation, will operate out of FAU's Jupiter campus while leading participants on exploratory forays across the region, a landscape that ranges from water-logged to parched, that absorbs spiraling population growth amid initiatives to preserve dwindling green space, that supports the state's signature Everglades ecosystem. On the road,
journalists will examine and learn about issues of relevance beyond Florida,
including wetland restoration, water management, land conservation, invasive
species, biological control, climate change, alternative energy and the
degradation of marine environments. Apply for the Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment! You may also contact Neil Santaniello, FAU journalism instructor and institute program director, at nsantane@fau.edu or 561-799-8047.
