Your students can learn about the world’s largest river restoration program! Using the Kissimmee River as a living laboratory, students are immersed in wetland ecology, learning about the Kissimmee River Restoration Project and its native flora and fauna. Aboard the Kissimmee Explorer, students wind through meandering bends of historic and restored river and participate in fun and educational activities. Students learn how to test water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen, pH and clarity. They also learn how to identify native and exotic wetland plants. By conducting diversity and abundance bird surveys, student track and identify native wetland birds that have returned to the restored Kissimmee River. Every trip is unique as students observe the changes to the Kissimmee River ecosystem every season. Alligators, wood storks and swallowtail kites are some sightings that students may encounter as they Explore the Kissimmee River!
This fee-based program targets secondary and post-secondary students, and is available to school groups of up to 16 as either a one-day workshop or an overnight experience. If you are interested in scheduling a Student Field Studies workshop to Explore the Kissimmee River, contact:
