CES-USGS Research Support Program

USGSFAU’s Center for Environmental Studies (CES) is pleased to announce our NEW CES-USGS Research Support Program for FAU graduate students interested in, or currently conducting, Everglades restoration-related research. The Program will provide a stipend and tuition costs for up to nine credits a semester for one graduate student per year.

Are you currently conducting Everglades restoration-related research or interested in starting a research project with your advisor? If so, we encourage you to apply for this program beginning this summer (May 15 – August 10, 2021)!

CES manages a research contract under the USGS’ Greater Everglades Priority Ecosystem Sciences (GEPES) Program. USGS’ GEPES Program ensures that sound science is the guiding principle for management decisions and restoration research for America’s Everglades. Potential research topics that align with GEPES priorities include:

  • Harmful algal blooms;
  • Invasive species detection and control;
  • Impacts of climate change;
  • Threatened and endangered species;
  • Ecosystem modeling;
  • Water flow and quality;
  • Biogeochemistry;
  • Precipitation dynamics related to climate change; and
  • An alternative topic to be approved by USGS and CES.

The proposed research must have strong links and benefits to Everglades restoration, decision-making, and/or natural resource management.

Eligibility
This program is open to all FAU graduate students in good academic standing.

Funding Details
This program will provide the selected student funding for up to one year, with a possibility of renewal for a second year. Funding will include a semester stipend of $16.18/hour for 20 hours a week, in addition to tuition costs for up to nine credits a semester. There will be limited funds available for local travel and materials, if needed. Due to the uncertainty of COVID-19, this work assignment may be remote, and will include periodic in-person (or remote) committee meetings on either the Davie, Boca or Jupiter Campuses.

Proposal Deadline
The application deadline is midnight on Sunday, April 11, 2021. Award notification is expected by April 23, 2021.

Student Deliverables
The graduate student will work 20 hours a week, in conjunction with their advisor and a USGS scientist (who will be a member of their graduate committee) to guide the research project. The student will assist with a related CES technical meeting, as well as complete these deliverables within the course of the funding year:  
1.    Produce a literature review,
2.    Summary report (max 3 pages),
3.    PowerPoint presentation to CES and USGS research team, and potentially others, and
4.    A peer-reviewed journal article (not required, but highly recommended).
