Between the peak of the last glacial maximum (approximately 22,000 years ago) and about 8,000 years ago (a total of about 14,000 years), sea levels rose approximately 150 meters (400 feet).  During that time, there was a rapid increase from about 15,000 to 14,000 years ago when sea levels rose approximately 20 meters (65 feet) in just a few centuries. This rapid sea level rise has been termed by geologists as Meltwater Pulse 1A. Some theorize that this event might be the basis for stories such as the Lost City of Atlantis and Noah’s Ark and the Flood.
