| Description: |
This is technical position performing chemical and bacteriological tests on water and wastewater samples. Field work includes collection and compilation of environmental data. An employee in this position will exercises independent judgement, skill and initiative in the performance and analyses of scientific tests. Work is performed under the general supervision of the laboratory manager and is reviewed through conferences, inspections and review of reports submitted.
Duties Performed:
Performs gravimetric and colorimetric tests on wastewater specimens to determine total, suspended and settable solutions. Determines acidity - alkalinity (pH), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), residual chlorine level, color, conductivity, and turbidity. Receives and logs water and wastewater samples, monitoring well samples and environmental samples. Prepares chemical solutions as required for analysis. Evaluates tests results and refers erroneous results to Lab Manager. Performs calibration and maintenance on field and laboratory equipment and logs all readings. Sets up and cleans laboratory containers. Collects specimens in the absence of the Laboratory Technician. Performs computer data entry, processing, and analysis. Performs any other tasks as required.

| Requirements: |
High School Diploma or equivalent supplemented by college level course work in Chemistry, Biology, or closely related field. Experience in laboratory work; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. Ability to apply scientific method in performing laboratory tests. Ability to interpret test results and to prepare analytical reports. Ability to set up and maintain a schedule of laboratory tests of water and wastewater. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. |

NELC has a proven track record of bringing corporate polluters to justice by providing essential legal representation to state and local citizen groups. NELC is based in Boston and has West Coast offices in Seattle and San Francisco.
Job Description NELC's paralegal/office administrator is an important member of the litigation team, and is responsible for: Performing basic legal research and preparing motions and pleadings for filing in court. Performing factual research in such areas as industry compliance with environmental laws and the environmental and health effects of particular pollutants. Developing and maintaining good working relationships with local, state and national environmental organizations and citizen groups. Coordinating media strategy and press conferences, and maintaining NELC's list of press contacts. Preparing and tracking the organization's budget and business plan Coordinating and creating content for website updates, newsletters, and other publications. Organizing and filing case-related documents. Administering NELC's Boston office.
Location Boston, MA
Salary & Benefits Salary will be commensurate with the applicants level of relevant experience, ranging from $23,750 to $29,000. The benefits package includes educational loan assistance, a 401(k) plan, paid vacation and sick days, as well as the option to participate in a group health insurance plan. Additional Qualifications Qualified applicants have a strong commitment to public interest issues, excellent verbal, writing and analytical skills, the ability to debate and speak persuasively in a charged atmosphere, and enthusiasm for the work. Candidates for this position must have at least a college degree. Relevant professional experience post-college is a plus. Relevant experience includes (but is not limited to) working in political, policy, legal, journalistic, or government settings. Advanced degrees, including a paralegal degree or a masters in related fields, may count toward a candidate's professional experience.
