What Can You Do to Support FGLC and GLCI Efforts?

Landowners:

  • Voluntary Conservation.  Plan and implement conservation strategies on grazing lands. 
  • Seek assistance for planning and implementing conservation practices through NRCS, Extension, etc.
  • Voice issues and concerns to FGLC, Conservation Districts, NRCS, and Member organizations (FCA, FFB, UF-IFAS).  Most landowners are members of the FGLC supporting organizations and should use their parent organization as a means to get their issues and concerns addressed.
  • Support through elected officials for funding of conservation programs, increased technical assistance, education and research.
  • Volunteer to serve on the FGLC steering committee, representing grazing land owners in your area.


    • Agencies / Organizations

  • Serve on FGLC Advisory committee, providing and receiving input and coordinating activities with other partners.
  • Review FGLC Strategic Plan and develop agency work plans to help accomplish goals of GLCI and address issues and concerns on Florida’s grazing lands.  Work with local landowners through locally led conservation efforts to identify issues and concerns, evaluate local priorities and seek solutions to address these issues and concerns.
  • Promote agency assistance and other resources for providing assistance. 
  • Those who provide technical assistance on grazing lands should seek training opportunities, which help to improve the quality of technical assistance provided on grazing lands at the local level.
  • Local offices should promote public awareness of grazing lands conservation and benefits to the general public.  Everyone, rural and urban, benefit from well managed grazing lands.
  • Sponsor producer educational activities and projects that focus on education for those who are managing grazing lands.  We need to get new technology, research and management strategies in the hands of those who manage the land and can make the difference.




    • Summary

    Today and tomorrow's decision makers must have an ecological understanding of the grazing land resources to make wise land management decisions that will provide for present and future demands of the resource.  It is imperative that adequate technical assistance is available by personnel trained in grazing management to help landowners use the latest and best technology
