Second Annual Grazing Workshop
Upcoming Meetings
There are two upcoming meetings for FGLC. The first will be in Gainesville, FL on May 4th from 9-12 at the Hilton. This meeting is held prior to the opening of the Beef Cattle Short Course. This is our annual business meeting with updates on projects and a presentation by Dr. Yoanna Newman on control of smutgrass without herbicide application. This is a two year research project funded partially by FGLC and the presentation will take you through how to implement the results of the research.
The second meeting will be held on June 21st from 10-12 at the Marco Marriott. For those who missed the smutgrass presentation Dr. Newman will give us a repeat performance. The second presenter will be Bob Montanaro who will give his program entitled Critters, Cows, and Cowboys: A Photographic Exploration into the Wildlife & Work of a Florida Cattle Ranch. This work encompasses a years photography at the Sexton’s Treasure Hammock Ranch in Vero Beach, FL. He captures the daily routines as well as the wildlife in a presentation that is designed to educate the public on what actually goes on at a cattle ranch. This is an excellent program and represents the balance between cattle ranch operations and nature very effectively.
Williamson Cattle Company awarded Stewardship Award for 2010
The Florida Grazing Lands Coalition (FGLC) and the Florida Section of the Society for Range Management (SRM) are pleased to present the Williamson Cattle Company with the second annual Grazing Lands Stewardship Award. This award recognizes contributions to the ranching community in the areas of grazing and wildlife management.
Williamson Cattle Company is a family owned and operated agricultural business located in rural Okeechobee, Florida. Okeechobee is one of the largest cattle counties in the Southeast and is unique for Florida in that there are four times as many cattle as residents. Okeechobee is located with-in 150 miles of 10 million Florida residents.
Frank Williamson Senior's father John Williamson came to Florida in 1896.
Frank Williamson Sr. came to Okeechobee in 1941 from Pinellas County and purchased the land, which came to be known as Williamson Cattle Company in the late 1940s. Frank "Sonny" Williamson Jr. and his son Frank "Wes" Williamson III currently run the 9,000-acre Okeechobee ranch. Wes' son John Williamson, the fourth generation cattleman of the family, runs the Alabama ranch. The fifth, sixth and seventh generation Floridians pride themselves in running a hands-on owner operated ranch. In 2000 the Williamson's celebrated 50 years of Ranching in Okeechobee, Florida. They are looking forward to the future challenges and rewards associated with agricultural life in Florida and Alabama.
