Everglades: An American Treasure (EAT) is part of the Newspapers in Education (NIE) series and was developed by the South Florida Water Management District in partnership with numerous organizations and agencies. This curriculum introduces secondary students to the northern and southern Everglades ecosystems, guiding them through the entire Kissimmee-Okeechobee-Everglades Watershed. It includes 8 lessons -- all of which are correlated to Florida’s SSS’s for middle and high school students
From 2004-2011, CES facilitated EAT workshops throughout the SFMWD’s 16 county region. We have reached almost 700 teachers with these exciting, hands-on lessons that brought the importance of Everglades restoration into the classroom.
Unfortunately, the funding for this program has ended. However, if you are interested in sponsoring a workshop at your school, please contact Alana Edwards, CES Education and Outreach Coordinator at 561-799-8462. If you are interested in receiving free Everglades educational materials, please contact SFWMD’s Community Outreach Specialist Niki Spencer at 561-686-6004.
