Student Programs at Riverwoods

Student Field Studies - Exploring the Kissimmee River

Our Student Field Studies Program targets secondary and post-secondary students and uses the Kissimmee River as a living lab for students to immerse themselves in wetland ecology. Students learn about the Kissimmee River Restoration Project, and its native flora and fauna while winding through meandering bends of historic and restored river. During this exploration, students participate in several fun and educational activities, such as water quality testing, sampling and identification of wetland plants and aquatic invertebrates, and conducting a diversity and abundance bird survey. The fee-based program is available to school groups of 20 as either a one-day experience or an overnight stay.

Volunteer & Service-Learning

We have developed a Student Service-Learning program that focuses on environmental stewardship. We involve students in field-based service activities to help increase their understanding of the complexities of conservation and management of natural systems. Personal exploration of natural habitats helps increase student awareness and, hopefully, responsibility towards the environment. Students receive volunteer credits while removing vegetation, planting native butterfly gardens or creating interpretive trails and signage.

If you know of a group interested in doing volunteer & service-learning at Riverwoods,

Student Research Program

We manage a Student Research program that provides logistical support for university graduate students that are interested in conducting their thesis research on a component of the Kissimmee River Restoration project. We work with SFWMD scientists to serve as the student’s field advisors, and provide logistic and field support.

If you are a student interested in doing research on Kissimmee River restoration topics,
