Field Studies at the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge

An Everglades Experience just minutes from your school!

The historic Everglades stretched more than 4 million acres, starting at the southern edge of Lake Okeechobee and flowing south more than a hundred miles to Florida Bay. The Arthur R. Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is located at the northeastern border of the Everglades. In order to restore the health and diversity of the Everglades, scientists are trying to determine the best water levels and flows in the Everglades.

To accomplish this, they have created a “living laboratory” at the Loxahatchee Refuge. It is called the Loxahatchee Impoundment Landscape Assessment, or LILA, and it is the largest physical scale model for ecosystem restoration in the world!

Student Field Studies at LILA: Instructors can bring their students to learn more about this exciting project. Students spend several hours learning about the native flora and fauna that make the Everglades one of the most unique ecosystems in the world! Students examine the aquatic invertebrates found at LILA and learn why they are an integral part of the food web. A hike along the Cypress Swamp boardwalk completes the day as students investigate a remnant second growth cypress forest that historically stretched from Martin to Broward Counties.

Internships

CES works with students from the FAU’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and Jupiter Environmental Research and Field Studies Academy (JERFSA). Student interns get the opportunity to participate in a variety of environmental projects conducted at the MacArthur campus, such planting, weeding and mulching in the Robert J. Huckshorn Arboretum, as well as assisting with many of the other environmental education programs that we offer.
