Lake Okeechobee: Headwaters of the Everglades

A Decision Makers Forum exploring the challenges of managing the lake as a multi-use natural resource was held at the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center in Belle Glade, Florida on January 17, 2008. The 190 attendees heard presentations on the role and state of the lake. These were followed by a facilitated dialogue among federal and state officials and local civil leaders during which they examined the challenges presented by the multiple roles the lake is asked to fulfill. The program concluded with presentations showcasing some of the local efforts now being made to build and diversify the regional economy.
